Hellville, the island’s main town and port, is situated in a sheltered bay and named after a former French governor, Admiral de Hell. The town features old colonial buildings and small boutiques. At the quayside, vendors display linens and wood carvings. A major highlight of any visit to Nosy Be is a trip to Nosy Komba, the tiny island known for its lemur reserve. These arboreal primates, with large eyes, soft fur and long curling tails, have lived here for centuries. Pier Information. The ship is scheduled to anchor off Hellville. Guests will be taken ashore via the ship’s tenders. The center of town is within walking distance. Taxis are generally available at the pier should you wish to go farther afield. Be sure to negotiate the price before setting out. Englishaspeaking taxi drivers are in short supply.
Shopping. Small shops in the town center and vendors at the pier offer embroidered tablecloths, blouses, shirts and children’s wear. Local perfumes, spices, wood carvings and woven straw items are also popular. When buying wooden articles check that the wood has been treated for termites. The local currency is the Malagasy franc. Most shops will accept U.S. dollars.
Cuisine. The rich harvest of the sea and the land is put to good use in the local cuisine. French influence is strong; you will also find tasty Arab, Chinese and Indian dishes.
Other Sights Countryside and Beaches. Local guides will be happy to take you to one of the ylang-ylang plantations. Beaches. Palm-ringed sand beaches and quaint hotels offer lazy hours of swimming and sunning. Les Cocotiers Beach Hotel, 9 miles from Hellville, has a nice beach and facilities. Please Note: When sightseeing independently be aware of poor roads and taxis in varying conditions.
