Croatia’s island coast stretches
for 110 miles and boasts a thousand islands, of which Korçula is said to be
one of the most beautiful, as well as the largest. Boasting an average of
3,000 hours of sunshine per annum, hundreds of different species of aromatic
Mediterranean plants and dense woods, plus a rich ecology, it is easy to
understand why seasoned travelers compare Korçula to a latter-day Eden.
Separated from the mainland peninsula of Peljesac by a channel of only one
mile, Korçula’s main town is one of the best preserved medieval towns in the
Mediterranean. The house in which Marco Polo supposedly was born in 1214 can still be seen in town.
